Silas Ratliff was born about 1809 in Montgomery, Virginia to parents Henry Ratliff and Mary Polly ___. He died about 1884 in Johnson, Kentucky.

Silas RATLIFF was married to Anne SPRADLIN on 17 May 1827 in Floyd County, Kentucky.^[1]

Analysis:

The only items able to be proven by the documentation given in the clue source are the first name of the individual (shown by first name on census records) and the estimates of birth year and place of birth. The maiden name cannot be identified by the 2 census records because she was already married to Silas RATLIFF by the 1850 and 1880 records. Likewise the census records do not include any death dates, parentage or other relationship status. Other research was needed to fill in the blanks.

Marriage Record

The marriage of Silas RATLIFF and Anne SPRADLIN was recorded in Floyd County, Kentucky on 17 May 1827.^[1] It consisted of a single paged document which had writing on both sides of the paper. When it was microfilmed these became two separate images.

The front page of the document contained the file number of 568 and the following statement:

"I do certify that I married the within named Silas Ratliff and Anne Spradlin on the 17 Day of May 1827

James Leney (?) JP"

The back of the document contained the following two statements made by Jacob MAYO, the Clerk of Court for Floyd County, Kentucky at the time of the marriage:

"Kentucky Floyd County to wit

These shall license and permit you to join in marriage according to the rites and ceremonies of the church to which you belong Silas Ratliff and Anne Spradlin and for so doing this shall be your sufficent warrent Given under my hand thos 16th day May 1827

The one in Pike County, Kentucky was eliminated due to the age of the oldest adults (male was 50 to 60 years and female was 40 to 50 years) at that age they would not have needed their parents permission to marry in 1827.
