Biography

Unknown Parentage; No Evidence of Yorkshire Origins

The parentage of William Rippley of Wramplingham and Wymondham, Norfolk is unknown and his origin is uncertain. Some family trees say that he came from Yorkshire and was the son of a Cuthbert Ripon/Ripley. However, no reliable evidence for that origin or parentage has been found and both such origin and parentage seem entirely implausible.

Date and Place of Birth

Based on the date of William's first known marriage (1574) and his date of death (1620), William was probably born sometime in 1540-1551, with about 1550 being a reasonable round-number estimate. Since William was married and had children in Wramplingham, he was probably born in or near Wramplingham, Norfolk.

No Evidence for a Sowood Marriage

The same family trees that say that William came from Yorkshire and was the son of Cuthbert Ripon/Ripley also say that he married in 1571 in Yorkshire a woman named Joanna Sowood and had several children by her. No reliable evidence for that proposition has been found and it seems quite implausible.

First Marriage

William married, first, Margaret Thomson at Wramplingham on 1 April 1574.^[1] Margaret was buried at Wramplingham on 1 December 1575.^[2] No evidence has been found that they had any children.

Second Marriage and Children

William married, second, Sicelye Row/Reve at Wramplingham on 5 July 1579.^[3] William and Sicelye had the following children, all baptized in Wramplingham:

Public Life; Move to Wymondham

The 1577 muster roll for Wramplingham includes a "willm ruplie" who was no doubt this profile's William.^[11]

William moved to Wymondham, Norfolk sometime between 1597 and 1615. He is included in the "book of losses" from the Great Wymondham Fire of 1615.^[11]

Death; Burial

William ("William Ripply Senex") was buried in Wymondham on 28 January 1620.^[12]
