The Henry Pumphrey pension application tells an interesting tale of the cross county journey of Colby Rucker and Henry Pumpfrey from Mississippi to North Carolina. See Pension application of Henry Pumphrey W8535 Lucy fn111NC in http://revwarapps.org/w8535.pdf also Colby Rucker's pension application at http://revwarapps.org/r9061.pdf which tells a bit about it as well. As I understand it his step-father was a Loyalist, so I guess Colby could not stick around in Mississippi. However, I am also of the opinion that his grandmother might have had Loyalist tendencies as well.

In the 1790 US Census for Wilkes County, NC it looks like he was living quite close to his aunt, Rachel Wisdom Bradley who was married to John Bradley. Perhaps next door to them. It was not far apparently from his grandmother, Ann Collins Wisdom's residence. Unfortunately the 1800 census in alphabetized so you cannot tell who lived nearby.
