Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1822 in Indiana, United States. She was the daughter of William Scearce and Nancy Walker.

"Pioneer Story" written by Elizabeth M. McQuaid (granddaughter)[1]

Among the early converts of the Latter-day Saints Church were William Scearce and his daughter, Elizabeth, a girl in her early twenties. They were living at Richmond, Wayne Co., Indiana, and it was here they heard the missionaries and joined the unpopular and new religion. After joining the Latter-day Saints Church, the father and daughter left their home and relatives in Richmond, Indiana, and went to Nauvoo to be with the people of the new religion they had embraced; they were the only ones of the family to join the church. Her mother died when Elizabeth was only eight years old. While living in Nauvoo and being an expert needlewoman, she went out by the day sewing for the neighbors and it was here she met and married her husband, William Laney, a convert from Kentucky. They were married September 7, 1845.
The Laney family was among those driven out of Nauvoo in 1846. When it was decided that the city of Nauvoo would be abandoned, they made a hurried trip to the homes of relatives in Kentucky and Indiana. While they were in their old home of Richmond Indiana, Elizabeth drew from a bank some money she had saved and helped to fit out the wagons before they were to leave for the west. She traveled by wagon with her father and her husband. They had 3 wagons, one being driven by a hired hand. They lived in Council Bluffs, Winter Quarters and in the spring of 1847, they left with the Saints to travel west. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in September 1847. They were called to settle Parowan in 1850 and Later Harrisburg, Utah.
