Biography

John "Long" "Ferry John" Smith was born 30 December 1772 in Cumberland County, North Carolina.[1][2]

He married Isabella Campbell.[3] Isabella was his step-sister, daughter of Farquhard Campbelll and his first wife Isabella McAllilster. After his father died, his mother Elizabeth Whitfield married Farquhard.

Isabella and John Smith had the following children (list from referenced book) [3]:

  1. Elizabeth Smith, born 20 February 1796, died 30 June 1876
  2. Alexander Smith, died young
  3. Farquhard C. Smith, born 13 December 1801, died 1870
  4. Isabella Smith
  5. Mary Smith
  6. John C. Smith
  7. Jane Smith
  8. William T. Smith, born 18 May 1810, died 9 May 1855
  9. Robert Smith
  10. James Smith, M.D.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, John Smith was recorded as 77-years old, living with his son Farquard Smith's family in Cumberland County, North Carolina.[1]

John died 16 June 1851 at his son Farquhard's home in Cumberland County and was buried at Smith Ferry, Dunn, Harnett County, North Carolina.[2]
