John Willhoite is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A125471.

John was born in 1742. He is the son of Matthias Wilheit and Mary Ballenger. He passed away February 17, 1837 at the home of his son Tobias in Owenton, Kentucky.

He was probably born in Culpeper Co., VA. He lived in Orange Co., VA during and, probably previous to the Rev. War, lived close to his Stapp in-laws.

John's marriage is proved by a petition dated 11 Sep 1819 regarding Joshua Stapp's estate in which Joshua's children and their spouses, including Lucy and John Willhite, are named. [1].

The Willhoites were of the Lutheran faith and Lucy was of a family who were strongly Baptist. They came to Kentucky in 1786 and stayed a short time at Forks of Elkhorn with the Stapp family and with the Vawters, who were the in-laws of Achilles Stapp, Lucy's bother, before proceeding to Owen County Kentucky.[2]

In 1786, John took up land deeded to them of 790 acres of Fayettte County on the South Elkhorn River. The deed was signed by the then Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, of which Kentucky was a part, Patrick Henry.

John Wilhoite was placed on the pension roll of Owen County, Kentucky for service as a private in the Virginia Militia.[3]

He served in the revolutionary war with the Virginia Troops in 1778-1781.[4] His pension states he was at the siege of Yorktown and the surrender of General Cornwallis Oct 19, 1781. Her served a total of 11 months. He was granted a pension 5 Sept 1832 (age 87) Owen County, Kentucky of $36.60.
