Richard Dean ("Dean") Miell was born 24 August 1904,^[1][2] in Central City, Buffalo Township, Linn County, Iowa,^[3] the son of Richard Henry Miell and Violet E Hinds.^[4]

Richard D. Miell, age 16, a resident of Central City, Iowa, was named as an heir of his father, Richard H. Miell's estate.^[5]

Dean graduated from Central City High School on 31 May 1923 and was a graduate of the Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri. He had been working as a machinist prior to his marriage.^[6]
