Biography

Princess Mako was born in Tokyo, Japan, on 23 October 1991. She is the daughter of Fumihito, Prince Akishino, and Kiko, who is Princess Akishino. Through her father, she is a niece of the current Emperor of Japan.

The Princess received her education at Gakushuin. In 2010, she studied the English language at the University College Dublin for one month. From September 2012 to May 2013, she studied art history at the University of Edinburgh. On 17 September 2014, she began her education in museology at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom for one year, graduating with a Master's degree in January 2016. On 1 April 2016, the Princess became a project researcher of the museum at the University of Tokyo.

In May 2017, it was announced that the Princess has been engaged to a former student at the International Christian University. She married on 26 October 2021. As required by law, she relinquished her title as Princess and left the imperial family upon marriage.
