Biography

Roger Toothaker immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Roger Toothaker was accused of witchcraft in the Salem Witch Trials

Roger Toothaker II was born about 1634 in England; the son of Roger Toothaker and his wife Margaret (Unknown).[1] He migrated with his parents on the ship Hopewell, Thomas Babb, Master, leaving London on 11 September 1635. Roger, the son, was 1 year old at the time of migration.”[2][3]

He was a physician, although possibly more of a self-taught herbalist by today's standards. He married Mary Allen on 9 June 1665 in Billerica, Massachusetts Bay.[4]. Mary was born about 1644 at Andover, Massachusetts; the daughter of Andrew and Faith (Ingalls) Allen.[2] She was a midwife. Billerica records show that on 12 March 1682 or 1683 and on 15 December 1684 the town Selectmen intervened for Roger to take care of his family,[5] which he apparently ignored as the family received aid from the town.

Witchcraft Trials

Dr Toothaker told many people that his daughter (Martha Emerson) had killed a witch. “...Toothaker sd that his Daughter had kild a witch...& farther sd Toothaker sd that his sd Daughter gott some of the afflicted persons urine & put it into an Earthen pott & stopt sd pott very Close & putt sd pott #(up Close) [in] to a hott oven & stopt up sd oven & the next morning sd [witch] was Dead...”, Deposition of Thomas Gage and Elias Pickworth v. Roger Toothaker. [6]

On 18 May 1692, Salem filed a complaint against Dr. Toothaker for witchcraft and he was taken to Boston Prison. His accusers were Elizabeth Hubbard, Ann Putnam Jr. and Mary Walcott. [6]

Awaiting a trial, he died in prison before 16 June 1692. [6][7]

Research Notes

"On 28 May 1692, Mary Toothaker and her 9 year old daughter along with her sister Martha Allen-Roger died in Boston Prison, on 16 June 1692, possibly after being tortured. No records of torture exist but even the number of 24 men inspecting the body to confirm death by natural causes is highly suggestive of the likelihood of a cover-up of torture." This is incorrect - Both Mary Toothaker and her daughter, Margaret Toothaker, were released; Mary died in the Billerica Massacre, and Margaret was captured by Indians.[8][9](Perkins-11750 19:10, 26 December 2019 (UTC))
