Biography

Burroughs “Burris” Estes, Sr was born 1766 (-1771) in Orange County, NC
He was the son of Thomas (the Tory) Estridge/Estes, Jr. & Elizabeth Burroughs.
Thomas was an active Tory in the Rev War and was captured, convicted of treason and sentenced to hang. His neighbors petitioned the Court to pardon him because he had a wife and several small children. He was pardoned on condition that he join the NC State Militia for one year. He did and was killed in battle. His brother, Moses, however was a patriot soldier. He received a land bounty and when he died, leaving no children, his nephew Burris (only son of Thomas), inherited his bounty land in Henry Co., TN.

Burris was about 16 when his father died.

"Burris Estes was an officer in the War for Independence, and had in the same army with himself eleven cousins of the same name and some of one father. He drew from the government 600 acres of land, and located his claim in Henry Co., TN, where he passed his last days." (Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northeast AR, Izard County, Ark^[1])
If he was in the fighting that continued in the South (especially in S.C.) in 1782, he would have only been 16 years old.

Burris married Martha "Patsy" Lloyd, May 26, 1792 in Orange Co, NC ^[2]

Burris' uncle, Moses Estes also died in the Revolutionary War. Moses had 640 acres of bounty land given to his heirs from the government. In 1820 Burris applied for this land. The record of his application says Moses left no issue, and his oldest brother, Thomas, was his heir. Burris, Sr. located his claim in Henry Co., Tenn. where he and his family moved about 1823-24.

In 1820 Burris applied for his uncle Moses' bounty land and located his claim in Henry Co, Tn. where he moved his family about 1821-25. He lived on Hazel Hollow branch east of Paris, Tn. He died there about 1829. They attended a Baptist church 6-10 miles east of Paris.

Note: Buried in Henry Co, Tn, probably about 7 miles east of Paris where they lived--maybe around Elkhorn. But with the dam and lake being nearby, it's possible that it is underwater and will never be found. ^[4]
