Excerpt from The Fish Families in England and America, pages 292-293:
1876 CAPT. NATHAN6 FISH (Nathan5, Samuel4, John3, Alice2, John1), eldest son of (1502) Nathan and Abigail (Havens) Fish, was b. September 11, 1727. As he was but five years old when his father died, he was taken by his grandmother, Mary Havens, and remained with her at Shelter Island, New York, until he was twelve. He then returned and was sent to school under the famous Master Niles.
His guardians were Thomas Mumford and Mary Havens. He was heir to a large estate. He married on October 13, 1748, at Groton, Connecticut to Catherine Niles, daughter of Nathan Niles, by whom he had four children. She was b. July 18, 1729, d. January 9, 1759, and was buried in the old Niles Burying Ground on her father's land. She was a Baptist. On July 24, 1759, he married 2nd a cousin of his first wife, Catherine Helme of Newport, Rhode Island, daughter of Rouse, Jr., and Sarah (Niles) Helme. She was b. March 1737, and d. August 22, 1818, at 81. Her mother, Sarah Niles, was a daughter of Nathaniel Niles, Jr. (b. March 21, 1677, at New Shoreham, Rhode Island, d. 1766), who married on January 20, 1699, to Mary (Hannah) Wilson, daughter of Robert and Mary Wilson.
He was faintly remembered by his great-grandson, Rev. Frederic Denison, who was but three at his death. He remembers him as sitting in the corner of the front room near the fireplace with short clothes, silver shoe and knee buckles, long waistcoat and white flowing hair--a patriarch. Known as as "Gentleman of the Old School," he was a man of serene philosophy, a large property-holder, inclined to the quiet enjoyments of the home, not interested in political affairs although he was a Justice of the Peace and represented Groton in the State Legislature (as Captain Fish), in 1771. On July 25, 1755, he united with the Baptist Society.
He built to the west of his grandfather, Samuel4 Fish, and about halfway between the highway and the house now occupied by Alden8 Fish (which was built in 1800 by Nathan's son Sands), and the highway leading from Cow Hill was opened in 1818. (The first bridge over Mystic River at Mystic Bridge Village was also built in 1818.) He d. at 95, OctOBER 22, 1822, and was buried with his second wife in Packer Burying Ground.
