Biography

George Griswold immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

George Griswold, son of Edward, was baptized 19 May 1633 in Kenilworth Parish, St Nicholas, England. [1][2]

He made his home in Poquonoc in 1649.[2]

He married Mary Holcombe, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Holcombe, 3 Oct. 1655 in Windsor, Connecticut.[3][2]

He was made freeman in 1669.[2]

George died in 3 Sep. 1704.[3][4]

George Griswold, eldest son of Edward and Margaret Griswold, was born 1633, in England, died at Windsor, September 3, 1704. He remained in Windsor with his brother Joseph on their father's lands when the father went to Killingworth. He was also an extensive owner of land bought of the Indians, was admitted freeman in 1654; an eminently respectable and worthy citizen. He married, October 3, 1655, Mary, daughter of Thomas Holcomb. She died in April, 1708. Children, born in Windsor: Daniel, mentioned below; Thomas, September 29, 1658; Edward, March 19, 1661 ; Mary, September 28, 1663; George, December 3, 1665; John, September 17, 1668; Benjamin, August 16, 1671 ; Deborah, May 30, 1674, married, December 12, 1695, Thomas Moore; Abigail, October 31, 1676, died May 7, 1638; Samuel, November 5, 1681, died June 1, 1682.

His profession was as an exemplary cutter of gravestones: for example, he carved the oldest inscription in Connecticut for the table stone of Rev. Ephraim Huit in the Palisado Cemetery in Windsor, Conn., in 1644.

Intestate Proceeding

In November if 1704, an intestate proceeding arising out of the Estate of George Griswold, late of Windsor, was instituted in the Hartford Probate District, Connecticut. His initial inventory was completed on November 13, 1704 . That same month, the Court approved a settlement agreement among George's wife Mary Griswold and his children/heirs. The agreement was signed by: Mary Griswold, wife; Daniel Griswold, eldest son; Thomas Griswold; George Griswold; John Griswold; Benjamin Griswold; Edward Griswold, son of Edward Griswold, son of Edward Griswold, for himself and his daughter Abigail Griswold, granddaughter of George Griswold; daughter Mary Cooley by her husband Joseph Cooley; and daughter Deborah Moore by her husband Thomas Moore.[5]
