Biography

"JOSEPH, Hartford, eldest s. of Joseph of the same, rem. a. 1680, to Hadley, freem. 1690, m. 11 Feb. 1681[1], Rebecca, d. of John Dickinson, first of the same, had Joseph, b. 3 Nov. 1682; John, 24 Oct. 1684, d. young; John, again, 5 June 1686, d. soon; Rebecca, 11 June 1689; Jonathan, 28 Oct. 1691; Lydia, 15 Sept. 1693; Benjamin, 22 Jan. 1696; and Elizabeth 22 Dec. 1701; and his w. d. 16 Feb. 1731; and he d. 1733." From Savage, vol. 4, p. 125

d. at Hadley, Mass., Feb. 16, 1721; moved from Hartford, Ct., to Hadley soon after the year 1679; miller and cooper, sergeant, ganger, sealer of weights and measures, etc.; died aged 73 years (If he was 73 at death, he would have died around 1730. Different dates abound. More research needed.)

Lived 76 years. Inn keeper in Hadley in 1696 and selectman served as selectman.

Cutter's MA Genealogies has this line as: immigrant Richard of Wethersfield/Joseph m Lydia Wright/then this Sergeant Joseph m Rebecca Dickinson. I believe this is in error and that the line should be: immigrant Joseph m Lydia Huit or Hewett/then this Sergeant Joseph m Rebecca Dickinson. YDNA triangulation from descendants of brothers William, Simon and Joseph supports this correction.

Joseph and his family lived in North Hadley. He carried on the mills then called "Hadley Mills," for many years. That was outside the protected area, within which most of the Hadley people lived. The Smiths were never disturbed by the Indians on account of their uniformly kind and just treatment of them, while the property of others less straightforward was destroyed, and the lives of the other people of Hadley were often in jeopardy. Apparently living within a protected fortress like area was not always helpful.

There are two errors in this posting. First Joseph m. Rebecca Dickinson in 1781 not 1791. Second, Joseph's son John was born 5 Jan 1687 in South Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay, which is correctly stated on his profile, but not "5 June 1686" in the above. I also believe there may have been a son Daniel born around 1687 or earlier. He moved early to Hatfield, where he married, and John's son John later moved to Hatfield and likely married, lived and died there. Both a son of John Jr. and grandson of Daniel moved to the exact same place in New York, and both those latter two (second cousins?) died and were buried there. Some of Joseph Smith III's family also moved there. This Daniel could also have been a s/o Joseph the first if born in the 1670's. If the latter, then the grandson of Daniel would have been a second cousin of both John II and Joseph III.
