Biography

John was born in 1715. He passed away in 1795[1].

  • Married Margaret Eleanor Ewing on Jun 11, 1737 in Lunenburg, Va.
  • Married Jane Kennedy on Jun 16, 1746 in Lunenburg, Va.

There appears to be confusion over this John Caldwell, who was the fourth son and fifth child of John Caldwell and Margaret Phillips.

Two accounts say he moved to South Carolina, where he died. [2] [3] The latter says he was killed by Indians.

A third account says he was buried in Cub Creek Cemetery, Charlotte County, Virginia. [4]

A fourth account says he married 1746 in Cub Creek to Jane Kennedy, removed to Maury County, Tennessee, and had: [5]

  1. Alexander, b. 1747
  2. James, b. 1749
  3. Anthony, b. 1751, m. Elizabeth Aikens
  4. Samuel, b. 1753, m. Harriet Scott
  5. Sally, b. 1754
  6. William, b. 16 Jul 1756, m. Eleanor Moore
  7. Polly, b. 1757, m. James Clemons
  8. Hugh, b. 1760, m. Nellie Daugherty

Margaret Blackburn White's research agrees with the latter, with the exception that it was John's son William who probably led the migration to Tennessee, where he married Eleanor Moore of Green County. [6]

John was born in Ireland, and immigrated to Virginia prior to his 1746 marriage to Jane Kennedy in Cub Creek, Lunenburg Virginia. Jane died 1780. The had eight children.

John was also married to Margaret Ewing daughter of Samuel Ewing, with whom he had four children.

Sources disagree on some of the details. France give date of birth as 28 Mar 1715, died In what is now known as Maury County Tennessee 30 Oct 1895.

Received "400 acres known as 'Flag Spring,' and 100 acres where my mill stands." Quote from father's will ["Caldwell," by Mrs. John Q. Anderson, p. 28]

Moved to SC. Marcia Logsden notes say he died in Prince Edward County, VA in 1775 or 1786? Truett Lee Smith has place of birth as County Derry; death 1795 in Maury County, TN.

"Uncle John and William's widow and her family moved to south Carolina. Uncle John was killed by the Indians. Our friend, John C. Calhoun, is a grandson of Uncle William." [Elizabeth Venable Gaines, Cub Creek Church . . ." p. 91, quoting from a letter from John Rodgers, of Nashville, Tenn., written 11 May 1825. Rodgers was a grandson of John and Margaret (Phillips) Caldwell.]

"Caldwell Workbook," p. 148 gives place of death as Maury County, TN. "Caldwell Workbook," p. 36, cites "Morton & Their Kin" saying John "died while lieutenant-Governor of Kentucky and was buried in Frankfort, Kentucky, and is honored by a monument at the public expense [He was the son of Robert Caldwell and Mary Logan and grandson of John and Margaret Phillips Caldwell.]" "Caldwell Workbook", p. 36, cites Collin's "History of Kenturcky," vol. II, p. 367, saying "General John Caldwell, born in Prince Edward County, Virginia, moved to Kentucky in 1781."

Caldwell Workbook," p. 148-149, gives several version of who he married and where he went. First entry says he married Mary Ann Davis and went to SC; had sons Joseph of Enoree, SC ("Dare Devil Joe" of the Revolution), and John. France says he married Jane Kennedy, 15 June 1715; died in Maury County, TN 30 Oct. 1795; was a planter at Cub Creek and owned much land; served in French and Indian War; after death of wife in 1780 he moved to Maury, TN and lived with son, William. Children were Alexander, James, Capt. Anthony, Samuel, Sarah, William, Polly, and Hugh. Worth Ray in "Mecklenburg Signers" says he married Eleanor Ewing and Charles Caldwell Chart agrees stating they moved to Lincoln or Gaston Co., NC. Children of John and Ewing are listed as Robert, William, Jane, and Samuel Ewing Caldwell. Andrea say he married Mary Ann Davis and went to SC; settled between the Broad and Saluda Rivers some years before Revolution; one of first settlers of Newberry and was there in 1769; killed at Dutch Ford in 1775. A son and a daughter each married into Worley family.

I agree with Elizabeth Ernst. Caldwell-5643 and Caldwell-403 are not ready to be merged. There are just too many questions.

From the research I have been looking at in the Caldwell Kith and Kin and others, I see at least 3 John Caldwell's information combined, every time I look at this particular John. I will be visiting a federal records facility in the fall of 2023 and will focus on this disambiguation.

I look forward to your additions. While the profile is technically owned by me, most of the data of it comes from contributions by others or merges. If you would prefer ownership I can turn it over.

John Caldwell, son of John Caldwell founder of Cubb Creek Settlement, did not die in Maury County Tennessee in 1795. Maury County was Indian Territory until 1806. He did not marry Eleanor Ewing. John Caldwell, Jr. (c1743-1795) (wife Nancy Hardin), son of John Caldwell Sr. (c 1715-c1767) (wife Barbary LNU) of Halifax County VA had children who removed to Maury County c 1807 led by eldest son William H. Caldwell (1766-1854) (wife Elizabeth Stanfield). John Caldwell Sr. lived and died in Halifax.

John Caldwell, son of John Caldwell founder of Cubb Creek Settlement, married Susanna LNU and moved to South Carolina c 1766 with his nephew John Caldwell eldest son of William Caldwell who died in Lunenburg 1861. He sold his inherited 500 acres to William Hubbard, deed dated 6 November 1769, Charlotte County VA deed book 2, pages 236-238. Wife Susanna relinquished dower rights. His will is summarized in George Leland Summer, Sr’s. Newberry County South Carolina Historical and Genealogical, page 465. Wife Susannah given a life estate. Children listed John, William, Margaret Dyson, Eleanor, David, James, Robert. Please everyone, help get this record straightened out.

Caldwell-5643 and Caldwell-403 are not ready to be merged because: A lot of work needs to be done to figure out what is correct and what is not correct on these two profiles as well as the other profile being asked to merge into Caldwell-403.

This includes figuring out the real name of the first wife -- double names were not common at that time period, as well as her actual dates.

Caldwell-5643 and Caldwell-403 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same father, same wives. Unlink current mother of Caldwell-5643.
