Joseph Cole was the third child (son) of Susanna (Gray; 1668-1727) and John Cole Sr. (1660-1724), of Plympton, Massachusetts. His birth date is uncertain; the Cole genealogy published Feb. 4, 1706 [1], however according to his SAR record it may have been on the 14th of February 1706 [2].
He married Mary (Stephens), their marriage intention published 28 January 1728/29 (double year date expression accounting for the Julian/Gregorian calendar shift). There were ten children of this family, born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts:
Joseph Cole served the British cause as a Pvt. in King George's War (1744 - 1748). He served also in Col. James Dwight's Regt, in the expedition against Louisburg, 1745. He also served in the French and Indian War (1756-57).
Military Service in the American Revolutionary War: The Cole genealogy published that Joseph Cole served in the Revolution as lieutenant and captain in Capt. Daniel Lathrop's 7th Company, Col. Thomas Craft's Regt. Artillery. He served continuously from May 9, 1776 until May 7, 1777.
An online memorial site states "It is said that Joseph died in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and perhaps after 1777, but nothing more is known about his passing at this time." [10] This account coincides with the cited Cole genealogy.
Notes
The correct expression of this person's birth year would be 4 Feb 1705/05 per the Julian-Gregorian calendar shift which affected all dates within the first 3 months of every year from 1582 until 1752 when the British adopted the Gregorian calendar.
Observe care not to confuse this person with Joseph Cole Jr. (1734-1809), who was his son, and who also was a Revolutionary War combat veteran.
