Biography

Edward Cleaveland was born to Moses and Ann Winn Cleaveland in Woburn on 20 May 1664.[1]

Marriages

Edward Cleaveland married Deliverance Palmer, reportedly in Canterbury, Connecticut in 1684.

Deliverance Palmer Cleveland died in Canterbury on 7 June 1717.[2]

Edward then married Zeruiah Church, rumored to have married in 1725 at North Kingstown, Rhode Island; but if this correct, this marriage is not included in the North Kingstown Town Records [3] (Page 15), though later, probable (mid 1700) marriages for his sons Palmer and Deliverance are indeed recorded in this ledger. The North Kingstown records were damaged by fire in 1870 and it is possible that a North Kingstown marriage record for Edward and Zeruiah Church, if it existed, may have been completely destroyed at that time. Zeruiah survived her husband.

Removals

Edward Cleaveland migrated early in life from Woburn, going first to Narraganset Bay, Massachusetts, later reported to have settled at North Kingston, Rhode Island, where lore has it that his children were born. However, as with the marriage to Zeruiah, the North Kingstown (NK) town records offer no evidence of these asserted births (page 65). [3] Though it should be noted that the NK records do itemized the births of Edward's grandchildren by his son Palmer. Thus, it may be possible that the North Kingston birth records for the children Edward Cleaveland were completely destroyed in the 1870 fire, or it is equally likely they never existed at all; the existing evidence makes this distinction unknowable. However, a search for the surname Cleveland (and Cleaveland) in the prominent Rhode Island Genealogical source materials for North Kingstown area during this time era comes up empty. There is no Cleveland surname in Austin's Rhode Island Dictionary, no mention of a Cleveland in the Fone's Record, Cleveland does not appear in the list of Kingstown freemen, nor does the Cleveland surname appear in the 1687 Kingstown Tax Record. The complete absence of the surname in the existing Kingstown records, strongly suggests they were not residents of Kingstown, Rhode Island in the 1600s.

About 1709 he accompanied his son Edward to Canterbury where...(the latter) appears a proprietary inhabitant by the patent of 1710."

Edward Cleveland lived in the North West corner of Canterbury now the South East part of Hampton; was taxed 1716 on 24 pounds.

In land distribution Canterbury, April 30, 1723, he received 1 1/2 shares as a first settler and planter.

Death

Edward Cleveland died in Pomfret, Connecticut on 29 June 1746. [4]

Will

Edward's will, dated October 3, 1744, proved in Canterbury, Connecticut on September 6 and probated September 9, 1746, is reproduced in the Cleveland genealogy. It names his living children Edward, Palmer, Abigail, Isaac, and Samuel, and the heirs of his [late] son Deliverance: Josiah, Mary, Hannah, Enoch, and Elizabeth, and bequeaths to them the portion of his (L.240) estate that existed prior to his marriage to second wife Zeruiach, leaving the balance to her. Edward signed his will with his mark.

Children

Edward and Deliverance Cleaveland had:

  • Deliverance
  • Edward
  • Palmer
  • Abigail
  • Isaac
  • Samuel
  • And perhaps others who died without issue before 1744

NOTE: Edward's will, abstracted above, makes it crystal-clear that his only children still living in 1744 are Edward, Palmer, Abigail, Isaac, and Samuel. This profile, after a change in 2017, and the Cleveland Genealogy book cited herein have listed three other purported children, all of whom were living in 1744 and therefore could not have been Edward's children. Two of them, Mary and Elizabeth, must then be the children and heirs of his late son Deliverance, who are named in Edward's will. The other one, George, not named in his will and still living in 1744, must be the child of some other Cleveland.

Therefore, Mary and Elizabeth have been disconnected from their grandparents Edward and Deliverance, and connected to their parents Deliverance and Mary. George remains connected here temporarily until his real parents are identified--further research about that needed. ( Halsey Bullen)
