Biography

Elizabeth is the child of James Corse and Elizabeth Catlin. [1]

She was baptized at the age of 9, in Montréal, far from home, and asked to become a citizen at age 10. She had an illegitimate daugher in 1712 by an unknown father, who died young. Her family died mostly in 1704, in the Deerfield massacre. Her 2nd husband is her son-in-law's older brother, making her her own step-aunt!?[2]

Research Notes

Secondary sources show a variety of dates for Elisabeth's birth, generally all in the month of February. This is a result of the difference between the Julian calendar in use in New England at the time of her birth, and the Gregorian calendar used in New France. A good discussion of the question can be found in John P. DuLong's online article from 2001 which remains the best source for accurate dates for Elisabeth's birth and death.[3]

There is also a Fichier Origine entry for Elisabeth[4] with an attached dossier (in French). The dossier also addresses the differing calendar dates. However both the entry for her and the dossier are mistaken (as of 3 Nov 2023) regarding the date of Elisabeth's death which was 29 January 1766 as verified by the primary source noted and linked in this profile's Sources.
