Biography

Profile adopted September 2013, research still undertaken.

Any information welcome.

Birth

Date: 12 MAR 1830

Place: Shanagolden, Limerick, Ireland

Michael was born into a large family.

Emigration

Michael travelled to Australia as an assisted emigrant on the barque 'Fatima' in 1850, with his younger brother Thomas and his sister Ellen. [1]

Travelling on the same ship were others from Limerick, including two girls Ellen Wall and Ally (Alice) Connor.

The Fatima arrived in South Australia on 11 June 1850.

Marriage

Michael and Ally were married in September 1850, four months after they arrived in South Australia and at the start of their first scorching summer in the new continent.

Family

A possible match has been made in NSW with births registered to Michael and Alice Madigan of four daughters Mary A [2], Honora [3], Catherine [4] and Alice [5] in 1853,1854, 1856 and 1857 respectively. Mary A and Alice have deaths recorded in the same year as birth.

It is not yet ascertained whether these are the same family.

A son, James, was born to them in 1865 in Sandhurst, Victoria.

Death

Michael died in Bendigo in 1901 [6]

Madigan-340 and Madigan-113 appear to represent the same person because: Michael Madigan was my great grandfather.

Copies of the Death Certificates of of Michael and his wife Catherine (Connors) Madigan show that these two profiles represent the one person.

I think that your Michael Madigan may be my great grandfather, pending the correctness of the note on the four daughters . My father's mother was born Catherine Madigan, in 1856 or 1857. Her parents , according to her Death Certificate, were Michael Madigan, and Alice (Connors) Madigan. Catherine (Kate) died in Sydney in 1930.
