Biography

When Martha Godwin was born in about 1658 in Virginia, her father, Francis, was 28, and her mother, Elizabeth, was 26. She married Judge John Bertie Cotten in 1701 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. She died in about 1732 in Bertie, North Carolina, at the age of 74.

Notes

John Cotten of Bertie Co., NC (Bertie was not his name) was married to Martha Godwin, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Wright) Godwin. The confusion stems from a 1720 Chowan Co., NC deed (proven in court Apr. 1721) in which Frederick Jones transferred 800 acres to John and Martha Cotten and their son Alexander. Jones refers to Alexander as his grandson. However the original of the deed no longer exists and it is believed that the transciber of this copy mistakenly substituted the word grandson for godson. Frederick Jones did have a daughter named Martha, but his will, probated in 1722, makes it clear that she was still underage and unmarried at the time.

  • Concerning John Cotten who died in 1728 in Bertie Co & his wives. After careful study of the available information. I Now think this way. "The record in the Deed of Frederick Jones to his grandson is believed by knowledgeable historians of the period to be a copyist error of godson. and that no daughter married John Cotten."
  • Martha Godwin the daughter of William Godwin & Elizabeth Wright was alive when their wills were probated in 1720 & 1727. Elizabeth & William were married in 1666 (I took a copy from the film of the original release made 6 Sept 1666 in Isle of Wight) As Martha appears to be one of the younger children from the order of names in her father's will written in 1710. Three boys & five girls. She was born about 1680 and there is a record that she & John were married by 1701 (DB2, p69, G B 2 p 52). ...his first wife died soon after the birth of William about 1694-5. Anyway we are certain that Arthur's mother was Martha the daughter of William & Elizabeth Godwin of Isle of Wight. Hence the name Godwin that had comedown in the family generation after generation. Perhaps John's first wife was also a Martha Godwin. And the name Spotswood I believe is a later addition--the birth of Alexander was previous to Gov Spotswood's arrival in the colony. The dates of the children's births are those Viola Carrie Allen submitted to Texas Chapter of Colonial Dames.
