Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Sarah (Hinton) Morgan was a Virginia colonist.

Sarah Hinton is said to be the daughter of John Hinton, Sr. and Mary (Hardy) Hinton of Chowan Co., North Carolina. She is mentioned in her father's 1730 will.[1]

She married Mark Morgan.

Her husband died about 27 Jul 1777 and she appears on the 1779 tax list for Orange Co., North Carolina.[2]

Sarah deeded over to her son Hardy slaves and money on January 15, 1780.[3]

On October 17, 1785 Sarah Morgan wrote her will. She names her children, John, Hardy, Anne Hart, and Sarah Yeargin, and her granddaughter Charlotte Yeargin. [4][5]

Interestingly she mentions her daughter Anne Hart in her will. Anne otherwise known as "Nancy" appears to have been the Georgia backwoods folk hero Nancy Hart. Sarah's husband Mark had dealings with Benjamin Hart in 1764 and both were listed as witnesses on Henry Sears' will. These documentations seem to indicate that Nancy Hart was not the daughter of Thomas & Rebecca Morgan, but, instead the daughter of Mark & Sarah Morgan. I have yet to see any primary sources that say otherwise.[6]

She died in Nash Co., North Carolina in about 1791 the year her estate was being probated.[7]

  • 2. Mark Morgan, Jr.
  • 3. John Morgan[9]
  • 4. Hardy Morgan, b. c. 1744, d. 17 Apr 1797[10]
  • 5. Sarah Morgan, b. 1747, m. 1. John Tapley Patterson, m. 2. Benjamin Yeargin, d. 11 Aug 1824[11]

Research Notes

Sarah and her husband Mark Morgan were the parents of the folk heroine Nancy Hart! Although early writings on her incorrectly attached her to other parents, Sarah's 1785 will proves that she was the mother of Anne "Nancy" Morgan Hart. Benjamin Hart, who is mentioned was Nancy's husband who was a Lt. in the Revolutionary War.
