Biography

Susan/Susanna Putnam was born in Tring, Hertfordshire, England, the daughter of Richard and Susan (Brown) Putnam and baptized there on January 28, 1609/10. [1]

Her father Richard Putnam of Drayton Co., Buckinghamshire, England wrote his will on November 10, 1625, he left L20 to all his daughters when they reach the age of 22 years, including daughter Susan. [1][2]

She married Edward Bate of Aston Clinton at Drayton on January 26, 1631/2. He was baptized at Aston Clinton on November 23, 1606, son of William and Margery (Phillips) Bate. [1]

Sometime after the birth of their son John in England the family migrated to Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay where her husband Edward was made a freeman on March 13, 1638/9. [1]

Her husband Edward died at Weymouth on March 25, 1686. [1]

Edward Bate of Weymouth wrote his will on October 22, 1683. In it he names: [3]

  • grandchild Patience
  • grandchild James Stewart
  • the rest of my grandchildren
  • daughter Anne Stewart
  • son John Rogers
  • sons Increase and Edward Bate [3]

His estate was inventoried on April 6, 1686 and assessed at L657 15s with over L600 in land holdings. [3]

  3. John baptized at Aston on February 14, 1635/6; may be the John Bates that married Mary Farwell at Chelmsford on December 22, 1655. (See note). [1] [6]
  4. ?Prudence born at Weymouth on June 11, 1639 according to Savage. [1]
  5. Increase born on December 28, 1641; died on February 20, 1717/8; married Mary Whitmarsh by 1681. [1] [7]

[Note: Re: son John There was a John Bate baptized at Boston in January, 1641, son of an Edward Bate, and another John Bate born January 23, 1642/3 - it is unknown which John married Mary Farwell.][1]
