Biography

Timoth(e)y Johnson, son of Timothy Johnson and Mary Greeley, was born on 22 May 1768 in Haverhill, Essex county, Province of Massachusetts Bay. [1] [2] He was baptised on 24 May 1767 (sic!). [3]

At an unknown date before 1790, Timothy wed firstly Anna Pixley, who bore him the following three children: [4]

  1. James Johnson, b. 2 Mar 1790 in Ulster county, NY;
  2. Daniel Johnson, b. 16 Sep 1792 in Ulster, NY;
  3. Sarah Sally Johnson, b. 7 Mar 1795.

Timothy wed secondly Dimis Demmis Welsh/Welch on 28 December 1796 in Canaan, Grafton county, New Hampshire. [5] [6]

Timothy and Dimis Demmis had the following children: [7]

  1. Reuben Johnson, incorrectly ascribed to the first wife Anna Pixley, b. 15 Dec 1798 in Grafton, Grafton, NH; named his eldest daugher Dimis after his mother Dimis Welch; in 1870 lived next-door to his cousins the R. Welch family in Newburg, Fillmore, Minn.; died 26 Apr 1877 in Lakeville, Dakota, MN;
  2. Anna Annie Pixley (Johnson) Johnson, incorrectly ascribed to the first wife Anna Pixley, b. 16 Aug 1800 in Canaan, Grafton, NH (named in honour of her father's deceased first wife); married Joe Hills Johnson 2 Nov 1826 in Chautauqua, NY; died 11 Sep 1840 in Ramus, Hancock (Macedonia), IL;
  3. James Johnson, b. 6 Jul 1803 prob. in Canaan, Grafton, NH; died 16 Aug 1808 in Keene, Essex, NY;
  4. (Edward Lowe Johnson, b. 21 Feb 1804 in NY);
  5. (Timothy Johnson, b. June 1805 in Canaan, Grafton, NH);
  6. John Broadhead Johnson, b. 10 Aug 1807 in Canaan, Grafton, NH;
  7. Elijah Hedding Johnson, b. 10 Aug 1807 in Canaan, Grafton, NH;
  8. Timothy P. Johnson, b. May 1809 in Keene, Essex, NY;
  9. George Johnson, b. 12 Mar 1810 in Keene, Essex, NY;
  10. Louisa (Johnson) Andrews, b. 17 Sep 1811 in Keene, Essex, NY;
  11. Daniel Johnson, b. 28 May 1814 in Keene, Essex, NY; died 1839;
  12. Lovina (Johnson) Brooks, b. 10 Nov 1817;
  13. Sarah Sophia (Johnson) Johnston, b. 29 Apr 1820 in Keene, Essex, NY.

Timothy Johnson died about 1845 in New Hampshire, [8] or about 1845 in Chautauqua county, New York. [9]

Note on Anna Pixley, Timothy Johnson's first wife

Next to nothing is known about Anna Pixley, except the following:
  • She was married to Timothy Johnson, probably before 2 March 1790, date of birth of their first son James Johnson, who died 13 Jan 1801.
  • Anna bore Timothy Johnson two more children: Daniel Johnson, born 16 Sep 1792, died in 1814, and Sally Johnson, born 7 Mar 1795, died in 1800.
  • Anna Pixley died in 1795. All three of her children died young. Three children of Dimis Welch - James, Daniel and Sarah - were named after them.
Conclusion: Anna and Timothy were not married in 1796 as some LDS FamilySearch Ancestral Files show (such as this one here [10], which shows Timothy having wed both Anna Pixley and Dimis Welch in the same year 1796), as all three children of Timothy's first marriage with Anna Pixley were born before 1796, and Anna herself died in 1795.

Note on Reuben Johnson and Anna Annie Pixley Johnson, children of Timothy Johnson and his second wife Dimis Welch

Timothy Johnson and his second wife Dimis Demmis Welch were married on 28 December 1796 in Canaan, Grafton, New Hampshire. [11]
  • Reuben Johnson, the first child of Timothy Johnson and Dimis Welch (NOT Anna Pixley, who was already dead) was born on 15 December 1798 in Grafton, Grafton, NH. Reuben named his eldest daugher Dimis after his mother Dimis Welch; [12] in 1870 Reuben is recorded as living next-door to his cousins the R. Welch family in Newburg, Fillmore, Minnesota. [13] Reuben Johnson died on 26 April 1877 in Lakeville, Dakota, Minnesota. [14]
  • Anna Annie Pixley Johnson, second child of Timothy Johnson and Dimis Welch, was born on 16 August 1800 in Canaan, Grafton, NH. She was named Anna Pixley to honour the memory of her father Timothy Johnson's first wife Anna Pixley who had died only five years earlier. It was a common custom in those days to name the first-born daughter of a second marriage after the deceased first wife (for another example of this, see Tamer Massey).
  • Several reliable Johnson Family sources confirm that Anna Pixley Johnson was the daughter of Dimis Welch. [15] [16] [17] [18]
Conclusion: Reuben Johnson and Anna Annie Pixley Johnson are not children of Timothy Johnson's first marriage to Anna Pixley, but rather, they are children of Timothy's second marriage to Dimis Welch.

Little is known of her childhood and youth... In February of 1840 Anna again moved to where Joel had built a saw mill. After Joel was called as Stake President, the family planned to move to the settlement of Ramus. Before they could move, Anna and the children became sick with fever, chills and ague. The children recovered, but Anna did not. Anna then was ready to leave this frail existence and fell asleep on the 11th day of September 1840. She was a kind and attentive companion and a tender and affectionate mother. wrote Joel. Anna was buried in the graveyard in Ramus (Now Macedonia) Illinois. The following is inscribed on her tombstone: She heard the Lord unto her say Go daughter sleep in peace and rest Until the morning of that day When Michael’s trumpet awakes the blest."

Johnson-41234 and Johnson-7204 appear to represent the same person because: The two profiles represent the same person. The only problem is the first wife Anna Pixley, whose marriage and death dates conflict, (the marriage date being that of his second wife), as well as the fact that two youngest children attached to her - Reuben and Annie - are born after Anna Pixley's death; in fact they really belong to Timothy Johnson's second wife Dimis Welch.
