Robert was born in 1834. He is the son of Andrew Johnson and Eliza McCardle. He passed away in 1869. [1]
Robert was a Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. In March of 1862, as a Colonel, he. organized the 4th Regiment of the Tennessee Volunteers at Camp Garber near Fat Lick in Knox County, Kentucky. His regiment was made of men from Bradley, Knox, Union, Granger, Jefferson, Greene, Hawkins and Hancock counties. The 4th was reorganized as the 1st Tennessee Cavalry in November of 1862 [2]. For his service to the Union, Col Johnson was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March, 1865. After the war, he served as private secretary to his father President Andrew Johnson until he retired in 1869. Unable to overcome a lifelong battle of alcoholism, he committed suicide.[3] He died unmarried and without heirs.
