Peter Cowen, was born in Georgia between 1770-1775. His parents are unknown. It is believed his father was the immigrant ancestor. By 1805 Peter migrated to Kentucky. He married Mary "Polly" Merrill around 1808. Although Peter owned property in several locations, the family home was on land located 6 miles northeast of Franklin, near Blackjack, in Simpson County. Peter Cowen died on the 4th day of Feb AD 1837, at home in Simpson County, Kentucky. In 1837 Polly Cowen appears on the tax schedules owning Peter's land on Drake's Creek.[1]
"Old Peter" Cowen provides us with many mysteries and stumbling blocks in research. Several descendants have related the original surname of the immigrant ancestor was Kious, Khius, Kias and Kyas, all pronounced Ki-us (with a long “I”).[9]

Note: Another note of interest is that on the 1880 census, Hickory County, Missouri - John Q. Cowen, Henry P. Cowen, and Mary (Polly) Cowen Bartsche stated their father's birthplace was Georgia. Daughter Ann Cowen Bunch, stated on the Simpson County, Kentucky 1880 census her father was born in Kentucky, as did Peter M. Cowen, Madison County, Arkansas 1880 census.[11][12]
Oral family history tells that the immigrant ancestor came from Germany. Peter, initials "P.K." was born in Georgia.[15]
Religion
Peter and Polly were probably part of the Primitive Baptists. Their home was located very close to a Baptist congregation. The early generations of the Cowen family in Hickory County, Missouri attended the Primitive Baptist Church. A strong Christian faith has been passed down through the generations.

Land along Drake's Creek, Logan County, Kentucky. This part of Logan County became Simpson County in 1819.
By the end of 1805, Peter had become a landowner, filing claims for three (3) tracts of land in Logan county totaling 750 acres, 400 acres lying on Drake’s Creek (Drakes Creek wanders through Logan, Warren and Simpson counties.) In Logan County, he first purchased 400 acres of land on Little Whippoorwill Creek and another parcel on the Red River . The Little Whippoorwill is a creek off the Red River and the land lays where the two waterways intersect. He bought them about the same time and then sold them together. Also in Logan county he paid taxes on a parcel of land on Drakes Creek at the state line, along the Nashville Road . Then he owned another parcel of land on Drakes Creek in Warren County (in the portion that became Simpson County), about six miles northeast of Franklin, KY. Thanks to work done by one of the Simpson County Archivists, Dorothy Steers, we have determined that this is the parcel on which his family lived. All together, Peter owned between 500 and 1600 acres of land during his years in Kentucky, and one to four slaves.
Note: Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln Counties were formed in 1780. Logan County was formed from Lincoln County in 1792. Warren County was formed from Logan County in 1796. Simpson County was formed from Logan, Warren, and Allen Counties in 1819. Simpson County is located at the southern, mid-portion of the state. It borders on the Tennessee state line. Property records also show that some of Peter Cowen's properties were on the Kentucky Tennessee state line. Sharon Moffitt Cowen[23][24]
Note: All children b. in KY. This family is known to have lived in Simpson County, KY from 1809 to approximately 1841. Mary (Polly) and some of the children moved to Hickory County, Missouri in 1842.
Note: According to Jack McClintic, tax records of Warren and then Simpson County, Kentucky after 1819 list Peter Cowen from 1809 to 1835, as living on Drake's Creek. He had 350 to 450 acres of land in the 1820's and 1830's and between 2-4 slaves.[25][26]

Peter Cowen (indexed as Cowing). It is interesting that on the census it can be seen that the recording of Peter's last name was tampered. Originally, it was written "Peter Cowan." Another handwriting wrote over the a and changed the writing to "Cowing." [33]
"From the names appearing on the census with him, it appears that Peter would have been in the Black Jack community in northeast Simpson." [1820 census for Peter from Ancestry, has the index wrong.][34]
Cowen / Merrill Connection:
1820 Census. Simpson Co KY, Douglas Merrill on p.6. Timothy Merrill on p.23 was 7th line down on 1820 census from Peter. Did not find their mother listed separately nor counted with them. Kay Haden
Timothy Merrill found in the 1830 Carroll Co TN census with a female age 60-70, presumably his mother, living in the household. He was still there in 1840, but there was no older woman. Timothy, age 72, found in the 1850 Census in Fannin Co TX living with Alexander F. Merrill, grandson. Timothy's son Wiley B. Merrill was head of the adjacent household. Timothy's age did agree with that of his birth record from Virginia. Biographies of two of the sons of Wiley B. were found in "Biographical Souvenir of Texas" which gave a great deal more information about Timothy's family. Kay Haden

Between 1822-1828 Peter served on many juries. A volunteer at the Simpson County Historical Society, who sent this information, says "It is my understanding that on county court day many people came to town (Franklin) and hung out at the courthouse in hopes they would be picked for jury duty. They were paid one dollar which in those days was good money. They lived in a period of "hard times" (we would say a depression). There was very little cash money they could obtain." Note: In 1837 Polly Cowen appears on the tax schedules owning Peter's land on Drake's Creek.[52][53]
Note: Sarah also recorded some of the tax records that she could find. Peter was on the tax records through and including 1835, she could not locate 1836 records. Polly’s name appeared on the tax records starting 1837. With the statement of him dying without a will dated 1837, it seems he must have died that year.

The Grandpa Chest
In 1958 Sarah Gaunt Thompson, a Cowen descendant, received a letter from her aunt, Alberta Cowen. The following is a part of that letter describing the chest:
"The 'Grandpa Chest' I have belonged to your great, great, great grandfather. The initials on the front of it are P. K. for Peter Khius. It was the original family name and was handed down from father to son, until my Grandpa Cowen gave it to me. So you can well imagine the age of it. Grandpa gave me the chest and contents and Wilma Lee his bed. She doesn't have it now, I'm sure. It was for a long time stored in the barn loft. The chest is solid walnut and weighs just two pounds less than a horse."
Sarah described the chest as much like a Shaker chest, dovetailed in construction, walnut with inlay and in very good condition. A drawer at the bottom and the hinges have been replaced somewhere in its history. On the center front of the chest you can definitely see the P and the straight line of the K inside a border. The initials are a little far apart. An appraiser believed the chest was made prior to 1840. The repairs have decreased its value as an antique. The intact chest in its present state, however, is of great wealth to family history.
The chest has moved from Simpson County , Kentucky to Hickory County, Missouri, to Green County, Missouri, to Michigan where Sarah lived, and recently back to Green County, Missouri. It now resides in Sarah’s brother’s home.
The whereabouts of the bed are unknown.

The patriarch of the clan (insofar as I know) was named "Khius or Kious" and tradition and oral family history tells us that he arrived in New York (date unknown) and that the family lost a great deal of property because they changed their name. However, it is also said that they were so happy to be in America that they wanted to "Americanize" the name; hence a change to COWEN.

No pension was filed under either name. Further research is in progress. Could "Course" be a corruption of the original surname?

He had 350 to 450 acres of land in the 1820's and 1830's and between 2-4 slaves.

↑ Source: #S188 Data: Text: 1820 Simpson County, Kentucky Federal Census: listed at Peter Cowing, therefore not in index for 1820 census. 1 male 10-16 yrs; 1 male 18-26 yrs 1 male over 45; 5 females 1-10 yrs, 1 female 10-16 yrs; 1 female 26 -45 yrs and 1 female over 45 (Who was the male 10-16 yrs; male 16-26; female over 45? Possibly Mary (Polly's mother and siblings?) It is interesting that on the census it can be seen that the recording of Peter's last name was tampered. Originally, it was written "Peter Cowan." Another handwriting wrote over the a and changed the writing to "Cowing."

↑ This is what Simpson Co sent me re 1820 census. "I will attempt to answer your questions. If you got the 1820 census for Peter from Ancestry, they have the index wrong. There were only a few people who lived in Petersburg which is the community listed on the 1st page of the 10 images in that set of 1820 Simpson. The rest are in the county without communities or precincts named unless they were in Franklin. From the names appearing on that census with him, it appears that Peter would have been in the Black Jack community in northeast Simpson."

↑ Source: #S188 Data: Text: Between 1822-1828 Peter served on many juries. There was very little cash money they could obtain."
