Research Notes

A search of ancestry.com, familysearch.org, and other genealogy websites as well as an internet search using both Bing and Google search engines turned up no definitive sources for Edward Spicer's birth, death or marriage. The information that he is the son of Gregory Spicer is taken from what appears to be one narrative that is repeated endlessly on the internet and is included in part on Gregory's profile. The ancestry link given above under Note leads to another posting of this same information.

Edward is said to be the father of three sons -- Henry, William and Peter Spicer. There are records for a Peter Spicer who settled in New London, Connecticut in 1666.[1] He is said to be a son of this Edward but there are no sources linking the two together. No sources have been found for the other two brothers, Henry and William. They are only mentioned in the above referenced narrative found everywhere on the internet.

There are two references to an Edward Spicer in Hotten:

  • Edward Spicer, age 21 -- 10 August 1635, "to be transported to Virginea, imbarqued in the Safety, by John Graunt Mr.
  • Edward Spicer, age 18 -- September 1635, "to be transported to Virginea imbarqued in the David Jo: Hogg Mr...."[2]

There are two more documented references to an Edward Spicer in Cavaliers & Pioneers.

  • William Batt, 250 acs. on W. side the North River in Mockjack Bay, Sept. 1, 1643, Page 901. Trans. of 5 pers: Christopher Hooton, Edward Spicer, ...
  • Mr. Barthalomew Hoskins, 800 acs. upon the Northward side of the Ewd. branch of Eliz. River, Jan. 1, 1645, Page 157. ... Trans. of 16 pers: [incl] Edward Spicer.[3]

These appear to reference four different Edward Spicers. If it were not insisted upon that this Edward was son of Gregory Spicer, born in Virginia in 1623, I would be inclined to say he might have been one of the above immigrants.

At this time I have found no sources validating his birth to Gregory and wife or his death date. (Shirley Dalton 17:07, 23 November 2020 (UTC))
