Col James Scammon (4) ( James(3) Humphrey (2) Humphrey (1) b. in Saco, Maine March 16, 1742 & d. there, Oct 11 1804, md. in Haverhill, Mass., July 8 1762, Hannah Page, who was b. Feb. 20 1742 & d. Jan 25, 1821. She was the daughter of Joshua & Hannah ( Dustin) Page of Dunbarton N.H. Early in 1775, Col. Scammon Led the 30th Regiment of Foote to Cambridge , Mass. & was there abt. one year. Owing to a serious error of judgement or to misinformation, he escaped the glory of being on Bunker Hill at the proper time. For this error, he was tried by a court martial and he was honorably acquitted. Soon after the trial, he left the Army. Evidently a man of nobility, he lacked those elements of character which command success at the critical moment of grave responsibility, but possessed qualities which endeared him to his comtemporairies & enabled him to shine in less demanding positions. After his military experience, he entered into business with his brother, Nathaniel, in Saco. He later lived in Buxton, Maine. His epitaph, which was selected by the Hon. Cyrus King, denotes the esteem in which he was held by his friends. 5 ch. born in Haverhill.
" This stone to strangers may impart the place where Scammon lies: But every friend consults his heart, for there he never dies."
