Biography

Baldwin VII, Count of Flanders, was the son of Robert II and his wife Clemence de Bourgogne.[1] He married Havise de Bretagne in 1110 and succeeded his father as Count of Flanders in 1111. Baldwin VII didn't have any kids with Havise before they were divorced and he did not remarry before his death. He had no known children. Baldwin VII suffered a serious headwound in Sept. 1118..."for his helmet being battered with repeated strokes, he received an injury to his brain,"[2] after which he retired to the Abbey of Saint Bertin and became a monk. There he lived for 10 months before the injury caught up to him and he died, naming Charles of Denmark as his successor. [3]

Identification with Baldwin of Biggar

Baldwin VII, son of Robert II, could not have been Baldwin of Biggar, who was recorded as fighting with the Scots at the Battle of Renfrew in 1164 because Baldwin VII had died in 1119. Even had Baldwin VII lived, he would have been 71 years old at the time, to old to be actively fighting in a battle.

July 20, 2015 -- NOTE TO RESEARCHERS: There is an indication that this Baldwin may also be Baldwin of Biggar, the progenitor of Clan Fleming. This is the assumption I am working on as Manager of Clan Fleming in the Scottish Clans Project on Wikitree. If you have other information and/or sources, please send them to me and I will make adjustments. Thank you very much.

From Wikipedia: - [[2]]

"Baldwin of Biggar was a mid-12th century Scottish magnate. He was granted the lordship of Biggar, and was made Sheriff of Lanark/Clydesdale by David I, King of Scotland.

Baldwin and Herbert, Bishop of Glasgow, commanded the Scottish forces at the Battle of Renfrew in 1164. It is likely that Baldwin was responsible for the considerable settlement of Flemish settlers in the Lanark/Clydesdale region.

Baldwin held the fee of Inverkip as tenant from Walter fitz Alan. Baldwin also held the fee of Kilpeter from Walter, and Kilpeter in fee to Hugh of Pettinain, from whom it took its later name, Houston ("Hugh's tun or manor"). The lands of Pettinain were situated between Baldwin's lands of Biggar and the Lanark Castle, from where Baldwin administrated the entire region. It is very likely that both Baldwin and Hugh were Flemish. Baldwin's stepson, John, was the eponym of Crawfordjohn."
