Biography

Alice Dutch was born about 1639, daughter of Osmund and Grace (Pratte) Dutch. Her father came to New England from Bridport, Dorset, England, first being an inhabitant of Newport, Rhode Island in March 1638/9, but by July 1639 was in Cape Ann, Massachusetts. When his family arrived, he settled them at Gloucester, Massachusetts. [1]

Alice married first, John Newman, who had settled at Ipswich, Massachusetts, after arriving on the ship Mary & John in 1634. [2]

They apparently had no children, as John Newman died in November, 1673, and his nuncupative will, left his entire estate to wife Alice. On March 31, 1674, relict Alice Newman was granted administration of his estate which was divided between the widow and a brother and sister of John, but no children are mentioned. [2]

She married secondly, Dr. John Dane Jr. [2] [1]

Their marriage occurred between March, 1674 and March, 1676 [1], as on March 29, 1676, a legal suit against Richard Lee, for debts owed was won by John Davis, represented John Dane and his wife Alice, administratrix of the Newman estate.[2]

It appears their may have been no children of this marriage.

Dr. John Dane, the chirurgeon, died September 29, 1684. [3] [4]

In his will written on May 31, 1684, he names:

  • his wife Alice
  • sons John and Philemon
  • daughters Sarah and Elizabeth
  • grandchildren Mary Chandler and Daniel Hovey [5] [6]

After the decease of John Dane, Alice married Jeremiah Meacham of Salem, Massachusetts, by about 1685. [2] [1]

Jeremiah Meacham died in 1695/6. In his will he names his 'now wife Alice.' In the settlement of his estate, his six children agree to provide support for their mother Alice during her widowhood. [7]

On March 30, 1704, Alice Meacham, widow and daughter of Osmund Dutch, late of Gloucester, made a declaration, granting all her rights to her father's estate to her sister Ester Elwell, widow of Samuel, who had cared for their mother during her widowhood. [1]

Alice died before May 4, 1704, when her step-son John Dane sold property 'immediately after the death' of the relict Alice Meacham, late of Salem, former widow of John Dane. [1]
