Biography

Chauncey married his brother Philo’s widow, presumably, her two daughters Eliza and Philomina lived with them.

Chauncey Pettibone served in the U.S. Army as a young man. He was listed in 1808 as a 2nd Lieutenant in Colonel Henry Burbeck's Regiment of Artillerists. He resigned from the Army while stationed at Natchez, Mississippi, and rode home to Connecticut on horseback. Shortly thereafter,

ents and the rest of the family. In 1812, Chauncey and Sarah (Gaylord) Pettibone, widow of Chauncey’s older brother, were married, and their first son was born 18 December that year. Chauncey became a prominent citizen of Stockholm. He was superintendent of the town from 1823-9 and served for several years as Judge of the County Court. He also was apparently a colonel in the New York militia, according to a jocular local anecdote about him told by another Stockholm man named William F. Jenison. Jenison had enlisted in the patriot war [supposedly the War of 1812]. His regiment had started to Canada when they learned that the trouble was over. On the return march, Colonel Pettibone sought out Jenison and said, ‘William, what shall we do? The people will laugh at us and we will never hear the end of it.‘ Between them they concocted a mock parade; when they reached their own neighborhood they dressed in fantastic costumes and rode on all the wind-broken, spavined old horses that could be found. Jenison rode a huge bull that he broke and trained for the occasion. The affair was a huge success, and the soldiers escaped a ribbing for their heroic march toward Canada and back home again [Smith, Historical Collections of Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society, 18:344].

The parents' "confirmed with DNA" relationship status indicators were removed because the DNA confirmation is undocumented.

Please see this G2G article on DNA confirmation for more information and guidance on how to provide the proper source documentation to confirm genealogy with DNA.

Also recall WikiTree Honor Code VIII: We cite sources. Without sources we can't objectively resolve conflicting information.

Thank you.

P.S., As it states in the Help for Confirmed with DNA:

"If there isn't a proper source citation the "Confirmed with DNA" relationship status should be removed (by you or another member)."
