  • In 1845 Charles bought the house of Rev. David Belden, called "Egypt", in Wilton, CT. He lived at this farm called Egypt - from the biblical story.
  • "Eighteenth Century resident was successful farmer in times of drought."[1]
  • This farm was located just north of Cannondale, Wilton, CT.
  • In 1868 he sold that house.
  • He is buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Brookfield, CT.
  • Wilton's largest wine producer (1200 gallons per year).
  • In 1860 owned 175 acres of land in Wilton, including the fourth largest farm in Wilton.

  • "Oxen were still the principal work animal on the farm. They outnumbered horses nearly 1.5 to 1..., about half of those in town, had at least one span of working oxen. Twenty four of the larger farms had two span and one farmer, Charles B. Sturges, who had the cider mill at Egypt, had three span."
  • "Potatoes were grown by almost everyone. The total product was 11,278 bu. or about 50 bu. per farm. The larger growers were Charles B. Sturges of Egypt, 200 bu."
  • "There were 4461 bu. of buckwheat grown on about half the farms (125), an average of about 35 bu. The largest grower was Charles B. Sturges of Egypt who raised 200 bu."
  • "Although the production of fruit per farm was small, "wine" which was probably cider was not in short supply. It was made on 76 (one quarter) of the farms, mostly in lots of 5 to 10 gallons per year. The largest producer in town,, however, was Charles B. Sturges of Egypt who made 1200 gallons, out of the 2011 for the whole town."
