"Oxen were still the principal work animal on the farm. They outnumbered horses nearly 1.5 to 1..., about half of those in town, had at least one span of working oxen. Twenty four of the larger farms had two span and one farmer, Charles B. Sturges, who had the cider mill at Egypt, had three span."
