James Scarborough is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A100609.

James Scarborough was born on 15 November 1755 on his parents' farm in Bedford County, Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. He was the son of Robert (Scarbrough) Scarborough and Robert's 2nd wife, Mary (Bailey) Scarboro. Some genealogies state that Robert married Mary in 1758 in Pennsylvania but the best evidence is that Robert's 1st wife passed away about 1750 in Pennsylvania, after giving birth to his 1st-born son, and that the young widower then took the baby and moved south-west to Bedford County, Virginia, at that time still mostly wilderness territory. There he met and married young Mary Bailey, born in Virginia. They are known to have had 11 children between 1752 and 1766, all in Bedford County (which was much larger than today), Virginia. James Scarborough was their 3rd child. [1]

The DAR lists James' place of birth as "Shenandoah Valley, Virginia". Bedford County, Virginia, covered most of the Shenandoah Valley in the mid-18th Century. [2] James Scarborough was an American Patriot and served in a continental militia during the American Revolution. The DAR records he was a Private and fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant on 10 October 1774 in Mason County, Virginia (now West Virginia) along the Ohio River. This battle was the last colonial Virginia battle against the Shawnee Indians and their defeat pacified the region so that the Indians did not ally with the British against American militias in the Ohio Valley in 1776-1779.[3]

James Scarborough married Rachel Wood on 18 March 1776 in Bedford County, Commonwealth of Virginia. She was a Virginia native. With his father and siblings, he and Rachel moved to Greenbrier County, Virginia (since 1863 Greenbrier is in West Virginia) around the time of their marriage. The couple had five daughters: [4]

  1. Agnes, 1777-1857
  2. Mary, 1781-Deceased
  3. Rachel, 1783-1789
  4. Rebecca, 1785-1786
  5. Nancy, 1786-1832

After the Revolution, James Scarborough and his family left Virginia and headed south. They first went to North Carolina, then around 1801 crossed the Appalachian mountains and settled in what became Anderson County, Tennessee, north-west of Knoxville, Tennessee. James passed away on his farm there on 12 February 1809. His wife survived his passing. Rachel (Wood) Scarborough passed away on 24 December 1840 also in Anderson County, Tennessee, USA. [5] No Find A Grave Memorial has been found for either of them.
