John was born 22 April 1737 in Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island, the son of John and Abigail Smith.[1][2]
He married Mary Phillips 17 December 1757 in Smithfield.[3][4] They are found there when the 1774 Colony census was taken, there being 1 male over 16 (John @ 37 yrs), 1 male under 16 (Solomon @ 12 yrs), 2 females above 16 (Mary @ 39 yrs & Phebe @ 16 yrs), and 4 females under 16 (Drucilla @ 15 yrs, Abigail @ 10 yrs, Hannah
@ 4 yrs, Mary @ 1 yr).[5]
Several related families migrated together to Adams, Berkshire, Massachusetts for a short time. In the 1790 census, the Phillips, Newell and Smith families are accounted for.[6] Besides John and Mary, 2 daughters are still in the home, Mary and Huldah. Solomon is now grown and listed after his father with 2 females and 4 males under 16 years. There are many other Smith families, including two others with the given name, John.
By the time the census of 1810 was taken, the household of son in law, Nathan Williams, contains a man and women over the age of 45. We can assume the couple was John Smith and Mary Phillips Smith, the parents of Mary.[7] Since they were most likely living with daughter, Mary Smith Williams, they most likely died in Ellisburg.
Research Notes
1, John's father is John and grandfather is Thomas, yet he is given the suffix 3rd, in the records of his marriage and the birth of at least 2 children.[8] There are two possible reasons he was call the 3rd. It might be, as descendant Ed Smith believes, that because there was an older child in the family named John that died, this John was the 3rd in the line with the name John. Another possibility is a custom of that time. It was common to use Jr or, in this case 3rd, to distinguish one from another when there were more than one with the same name living in the same location at any given time. Usually the oldest would be Sr and the youngest Jr or II or perhaps III. The 1790 Census for Smithfield, Providence Rhode Island, where this family was from, shows many carrying Smith as their family name and 3 Johns. Page 2 reveals John, Benjamin, Abraham, George and Clad Smith. Page 4 holds Thomas and Mary Smith households. Page 5 contains Welcome and Emor Smith. On Page 6 we see Jeremiah, Rufus, Jacob, Jesse, John, Jacob, Elijah, Joshua, Eseck, Oliver, and Daniel Smith Jr. On Page 7 we see Daniel, James, Elisha, John, William, Resolved, and Rebecca Smith. The final page of the census holds Thomas, Elisha, Juni and Emor Smith families.[9]

Phebe and Drusilla married. Phebe remained in Rhode Island.
