Sir Dalrymple Arbuthnot was born on 1 April 1867. He was the son of Major Sir William Wedderburn Arbuthnot and Alice Margaret Thompson.
He fought in the Chitral Campaign in 1895 (medal with clasp) and he fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902, where he was mentioned in despatches (two medals, five clasps).
He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Shropshire.
Upon the death of his brother Robert he succeeded as the 5th Baronet Arbuthnot, of Edinburgh [U.K., 1823] on 31 May 1916.
He married Alice Maud Arbuthnot (daughter of Hugh Lyttleton Arbuthnot and Elizabeth Fountaine Walker) on 15 January 1918 at St. George Hanover Square, London, England.[2]
They had two children.
He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Field Artillery. He served in the 1st World War where he was mentioned in despatches eight times (Brevet), commanded 12th Corps in 1916 and was awarded the Order St Michael and St Lazarus of Italy.
He gained the rank of Honorary Brigadier-General in 1920.
Dalrymple died in 1941 at the age of 73.[3]

“A more successful reconnaissance was carried out by Major Arbuthnot, officer commanding 24 Battery, 38th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, at La Chapelle d’Armentières, in the area held by the Queen’s Westminster Rifles, as one of his Gunners described:
My OC put on a German uniform and had a good look around the German lines. He spotted what he wanted to find – a German machine-gun post which had given our infantry a deal of trouble; he also saw the German billets in a village called Wez-Macquart."
