Miles was born abt 1797 in Rowan County, North Carolina, on Muddy Creek.
He is the son of John Hampton and Elizabeth Smith. He was married 20 Dec 1823, Lawrence, Alabama, to Rhoda Ann Bodrey (1805–1860).
They had 19 children, 13 are known. Miles died in Miller County, Missouri while he and his wife were moving with their son Edmond Green Wood Hampton's family to Taney County, Missouri.
