Biography

Joseph was a Friend (Quaker)

Joseph Aldrich/Aldridge was born at Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony on June 4, 1635, son of George and Catherine (Seald) Aldrich. [1][2] [3]

On the 26th of the 12th month in 1661 (February 26, 1621/2) in Weymouth, Captain Torrey of said town was the officient at the marriage of Joseph Aldrich and "Patience Ozbourne" who was also of Weymouth. [4][5][6]

Joseph was a member of the Society of the Friends who resided with his family at Braintree until 1664 when they moved to Mendon, Massachusetts Bay Colony. On February 15,1681 he sold his farm in Mendon to Edward Linchford of Braintree and moved to Providence, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations by 1682. There he was chosen to be the sealer of weights and measures.[3][1]

Joseph died in Providence before Aug. 20, 1701 before his estate was inventoried; it totalled L18, 3s, 9 d and included 3 cows, a heifer, a calf, 3 swine, a warming and a frying pan, wooden, pewter and iron ware, a table, chairs, a spinning wheel, a sword, etc. His eldest son Joseph, was executor and according to the will he was to provide for his mother Patience; an agreement made on June 26, 1701 whereby Joseph would receive the house, house lot, orchard and 20 acres of land in exchange for taking care of his parents. Their son Joseph, however, died on April 24, 1705 so on July 8, 1705, his brother Ephraim signified to town council, that through an agreement he had made with his brother Joseph, he would continue to care for their mother, Patience. Patience died in 1705, she had been unable to care for herself because of insanity.[1][2][3]

Research Note

  • It is best not to rely on FindaGrave as a source for people born this long ago. There is no grave stone to reveal accuracy. In the case of this Joseph Aldrich-439, the death date given is actually for his son, Joseph Aldrich-1100.[10][11]
  • Mary Osborne's mother is named "Knight" or "Haight" is some genealogical texts. Her profile, Mary Osborn claimed at one time that she was the daughter of Walter Knight, who, it has been found, had no documented children. Others claim she was the daughter of John and Mary Osbourn of Weymouth.[1][3]

edits done, as far as I am aware. This profile cannot be protected, since there is no project for persons born during this time period. However, there is a lot of conflicting information out there online. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN EDITING THIS PROFILE. Thank you.
Beautifully done. Thank you so very much, and we might be able to change the privacy level.

I'm with you on please take care when editing this profile-I believe it is correct now. Rusty

I'm one of the profile managers here, trying to clean up this profile - it may take several days. I'll post here again when I'm done.

I would appreciate if others would refrain from edits during this time. The profile may look off, a bit wierd, for a while, but it should be improved and looking good when I'm finished. I'll

I'll update the bio & data and use RESEARCH NOTES to explain reasoning. I'll delete all family tree information and sources that point to family trees. That info can still be found under "changes."

If you have questions, either contact me privately at Aldrich-908 or post a public comment here.

Thanks.

I plan to update this profile, when I can grab a few hours…
Thank you Cheryl, time is hard to come by as it goes, your input will be appreciated much from where I am at right now.

Would you like to be put on the trusted thing for any reason? Again, thank you, Rusty

I know time is hard to come by sometimes. I'm retired, so I have a bit more of it to give to genealogy. You're the other profile manager here, so I'll private message you if I have any questions. Also you may have some input before I'm finished, which would be appreciated and helpful. Thanks.
Although the information shown here is consistent with what is found in other genealogies (e.g., "The George Aldrich Genealogy by Alvin James Aldrich), the residence chronology (Braintree until 1664, Mendon until 1682 and then Providence) is not consistent with the birth locations for the children - Braintree in 1663, 1665 and 1667, and Providence in 1668 (and presumably the next two in the early 1670s). Sarah's birth location (which is not shown here but which is found in the Braintree records) can be explained as a King Philip's War relocation, but there are no other cataclysmic events to explain why Samuel, Ephraim, John, James and Mercy would be born in a different town from where their parents were living.

Thanks John, I'll review the children's birth dates and places over the next several days.
