Biography

Wayne Hildreth, the son of L. C. Hildreth and Dorothy Bontelle, was born at Martinsburg, Lewis, New York, on July 29, 1835.^[1]

In 1840, "Alanson" C. Hildreth is shown on the census in Denmark, Lewis, New York, with: Males: 2 under 5; 1 10-15 years old; 1 15-20yo; 3 20-30yo; and 1 40-50yo; and with Females: 2 5-10yo; 1 10-15yo; 1 20-30yo; and 1 30-40yo.^[2]

In 1850, "Johnson" C Hildreth, 50, a inn keeper, lived in Denmark, Lewis, New York, with 7 young Hildreths: Maria, 18; Mary, 17; Wayne, 15; Henry, 12; John, 9; Eliza, 7; and Alfred, 5. Thomas D. White, 35, an ostler, is living with the family. All were born in New York.^[3]

He married Frances S. Hobart on September 1, 1858, at Richmond, Sagadahoc, Maine.^[1] Based on US Census and other documents, they had at least the following children:

In 1870, Wayne Hildreth, 34, a dry goods merchant b. New York, lived in Iowa with his wife Francis, 33 b. New York, and daughter Lillie, 10 b. Illinois.^[7]

In 1880, Wayne Hildreth, a 44 year old merchant b. New York, lived in Winthrop, Buchanan, Iowa, with his wife Frances, 43 b. New York, and daughter Lillie E.,20, a clerk in a store. Brother Alfred K. Hildreth, 34 b. New York, a clerk in a store, is living with the family.^[8]

In 1885, Wayne Hildreth, a year old merchant b. New York, lived in Byron, Buchanan, Iowa, with his wife Frances, 48 b. New York, and son Karl W., 3 b. Buchanan County, Iowa. Sara Carstone, 18 b. Germany, was living with the family.^[9]

In 1895, Wayne Hildreth, 58 b. New York, was living in Marshall, Iowa, with Frances Hildreth, 57 b. New York, and Carl W Hildreth, 13 b. Buchanan County, Iowa. Orrin Hobart, 80 b. New York, and Lena Heng, 20 b. Illinois, were living with the family. Wayne was Presbyterian, and Frances and orrin were Congregationalists. No religion is recorded for Carl.^[10]

In 1900, Wayne Hildreth, 65 b. New York July 1835, was a retired merchant. He lived in a home he rented in Winthrop, Buchanan, Iowa, with his wife Frances S., 61 b. New York October 1838, and uncle Orrin Hobart, a widower 85, b. New York July 1814. Wayne and Frances have been married for 41 years, and Frances has had 4 children, 2 of whom are living. Wayne's father was born in Vermont and his mother in New York, while both Frances's parents were born in New York.^[11]

In 1905, Wayne was 68 years old, b. New York, and married. He lived in Winthrop, Buchanan, Iowa. He was retired and has lived in Iowa for 38 years. His parents were both born in New York.^[12] Frances S. Hildreth, 67 b. New York, is also enumerated on this Census, She is married and has been living in Iowa for 37 years.^[13]

Wayne Hildreth of Marshalltown, Marshall, Iowa, made his Will on 27 July 1898. In it he gave everything to his wife Frances S. Hildreth. The Will was proved on 9 March 1908.^[14]

Wayne Hildreth, son of L C Hildreth and Dorothy Boutelle, died on 23 Jan 1908 at Winthrop, Buchanan, Iowa. He was 72 years old.^[15]
