John was the progenitor of the Macdonalds of Ardnabie. In 1592 he was granted the lands of Kylisstrugsay and elsewhere in Morar. Later John obtained a wadset of lands at Invergarry and Letterfearn. A year before his death he received a wadset of the lands of Ardnabie, Stronroick, and Ardochy.
Captain John faught under his nephew's banner in the Montrose campain which included the Battle of Inverlochy in 1645.
He was married to a daughter of Grant Of Glenmoriston and they had several children.
