Biography

Elizabeth (Tucke) Sherburne immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Elizabeth Tuck was baptized at St. Botolph without Aldgate, London, England, 6 January 1628/9, "daughter to Robert Tuck tailor and Joane his wife."^[1]

Given as Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Tucke of Hampton, “chirurgeon,”^[2] she married, about 1649, John Sherburne.

Immigration to New England

Elizabeth is presumed to have immigrated to New England with her parents and siblings, probably in the spring of 1636.^[3][4]

Life at New England

Elizabeth's father Robert Tuck, was noticed of Watertown, Massachusetts Bay, 25 July 1636, when he was included in the second land division. He received further grants on 28 February 1636/7 and 26 June 1637.^[5]

Robert Tuck was among those who petitioned for the Winnacunnet plantation (later Hampton, New Hampshire), granted by Massachusetts 6 September 1638.^[6] The family presumably removed to Hampton about that time.

Elizabeth's husband, John Sherburne, was a prominent and useful citizen of Portsmouth for fifty years.

On Nov 12, 1691, John Sherburne made his will mentioning his wife Elizabeth, sons John and Henry, daughters Elizabeth and Mary, and his father-in-law Robert Tucke.

John died probably in Oct .1693, his wife surviving him.

The known children of John and Elizabeth were^[7]:

1. John Sherburne, b about 1650; m (1) Mary Jackson; m (2) widow Mary Moses Oct 20, 1720; d about 1730. He is known as Captain John Sherburne, and lived at the Plains in Portsmouth^[8].
2. (probably) Joseph Sherburne, b about 1653; m Amy Cowell Oct 19, 1678 and died soon thereafter
3. Elizabeth Sherburne, living in 1691; probably married
4. Mary Sherburne, unmarried in 1691; presumably the wife of (1) Gowen Cox and (2) Peter Matthews of Ipswich
5. Henry Sherburne, b about 1666 (age 72 in 1738); m Sarah Wiggin; d in 1738; wealthy farmer and landlord of the Globe tavern on Portsmouth Plains
