Biography

Richard was the son of John Towneley and Isabel Sherburne.[1][2][3] The contract for his parents' marriage was signed in March 1445[4][5] so he was almost certainly born after 1445.

Richard married Jane or Joanna Southworth.[3] The contract was signed on 24 September 1472.[6]

Richard was knighted on 24 July 1482.[6][7] He died on 8 September 1482. The Inquisition Post Mortem was held on 19 December 1482.[3][6]

John Stanley, married before 1405 Elizabeth Harington. Sir John Stanley died 27 Nov. 1437. His widow, Elizabeth, was a legatee in the 1444 will of her sister Agnes Sherburne. She was living 22 March 1444/5 (date of indenture between her and Richard Towneley for the marriage of Richard's son and heir apparent, John, to marry Isabel, daughter of Richard Sheburne the younger).

Thank you!

Isabel Sherburne, married by indenture dated 22 March 1444/5 (as his 2nd wife) John Towneley. They had five sons, Richard, Knt., Lawrence, Nicholas, Henry, and Bernard, and one daughter, Grace. He married previously Isabel Butler, daughter of Nicholas Butler, Esq., from whom he was divorced.

Thank you!

The contract of Richard's marriage

to Joanna, sister of Christopher Southworth, is dated 24th September 1472 and their son John was born at Towneley on 31st July 1473. In 1482 Richard took part in the war with Scotland and on 24th July was knighted at Hutton Field. Sir Richard died on 8th September and the record of his inquisition post mortem, which took place on 19th December 1482, survives to show that his son John was heir to the estate. Previously in 1480, Richard had arranged the marriage of John, then seven years old, to Isabella, daughter and heir apparent of Charles Pilkington. Therefore, in 1482, John became the ward of his father-in-law, now Sir Charles Pilkington. Sir Charles himself died around 1485 and his daughter inherited the estate of Gateford in Nottinghamshire. Towneley-42 and Townley-25 appear to represent the same person because: same parents and data mostly align. Need to choose which is LNAB, l lean towards Towneley-42. Resulting Bio can show alternate spelling.
