Michael Cashin was a business figure and politician in Newfoundland.
Born in Cape Broyle, Newfoundland, in 1864, he was the son of Richard Cashin, an inshore fisherman, and Catherine Coady. In 1888 he married Gertrude Clare Mullowney; they had four sons and a daughter.
After his brother John's death in 1886, Cashin took over his fishing business at Cape Broyle and, with his wife's help, made it into a profitable enterprise. He also became involved in the salvage business, earning the nickname "King of the Wrecks".
His political career began with his 1893 election to the House of Assembly for Ferryland. From 1909 until 1919, he was Minister of Finance and Customs. He became prime minister for a short time in 1919. He retired from politics in 1924.
During World War I, Cashin served as vice-chairman of the Newfoundland Patriotic Fund and of the finance committee of the Patriotic Association of Newfoundland. [1] In 1918 he was created a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his contribution to the war effort.[2]
He died in 1926[3] and was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, St. John's.[4]
