Biography

Medlands estimates Baudouin's birthdate as 1063/68 based on his being knighted before about 1086. He was Canon at Cambrai, Reims and Liège before becoming a knight. [1]

Baldwin was the son of Eustache II and Goda Of England, widow of Dreux. [2]

Following the death of his brother Godefroi Baudouin arrived in Jerusalem in November 1100 and was crowned Baudouin I King of Jerusalem on Christmas Day 1100.[1]

This was the 1st Crusade.

In "The Crusades", by Thomas Asbridge, pages 118-120 Baldwin was already in the holy land and Count of Edessa when news of his brothers death arrived, He appointed his cousin Baldwin of Boureq, as new count of Edessa. He set out from Edessa with 200 knights and 700 infantry men in mid Oct. engaged a Muslim force led by Duqaq of Damascus near the Dog River in Lebanon. I Palestine he had to out manuver Tancred and Daimbert and made contact with his supporters in Jerusalem. He arrived on the 9th of November 1100 and welcomed into the city. Baldwin was declared the new ruler on 11 Nov 1100. To win support of the church he engaged in raiding parties to the south and eastern frontiers to secure pilgrimage routes. On Dec 25, 1100 the patriarch at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Baldwin was crowned and anointed Baldwin of Boulogne as the first Frankish King of Jerusalem. This averted a potential civil war from Tancred and Daimbert who had their own designs on the throne.

They had four sons, Eustache III, Godfrey, Baldwin (I) [King of Jerusalem], and William, and one daughter, Agnes. By an unidentified mistress (or mistresses), he had two illegitimate sons, Geoffrey and Eustace (I) Garnier. Eustache II, died in or before 1088. Ida C died 13 August 1113.

Thank you!
