Biography

John W. (maybe West) was born about 1801/2 in Smith County, TN, the son of Abraham Huddleston and Mary "Polly" Allen.

His middle name isn't proven, though some think it was "West". [His daughter-in-law, Margaret Maulding was the daughter of John West Maulding, so there might be some confusion with that name.]

His father and most of his family moved to Oregon County, MO in 1821, but John did not. He married Mary Baty in Pope Co, IL in 1823, then moved to Oregon Co, MO about 1828, probably bringing his widowed mother-in-law, Margaret (Hazel) Baty, with them. (She signed a consent for her daughter Margaret to marry in Pope Co, IL in 1823). John's son, Abraham was born in Illinois in 1827 and son John George was born in Missouri in Oct., 1828.

When they finally came to Missouri, they settled by the rest of his big family near Thomasville (Oregon County). The counties changed (from Wayne to Ripley to Oregon), but he never moved away from the Huddleston settlement near Thomasville. His parents and all of his siblings died there.
