Biography

Johann Christoval Haydel (Jean Christophe) was born in New Orleans, LA about 1730. His burial was 10 SEP 1800 at Edgard, St. John the Baptist, LA[1] [2] [3][4]
He married Charlota Oubre 1 FEB 1752, German Coast, St. Charles, LA.[5] He was listed on the 1784 census of the Second Coast of the Germans, with wife Charlote Ouvre, no children; living with Jorge Haydelle and Marguerite Bossie [his son and daughter-in-law.] (LC&ML, 77). [6]
In 1785, Christophe was the high bidder on land being auctioned belonging to Thomas Becnel. According to the document, the land consisted of 4x40 arpents on the right bank of the river ascending around 14 leagues from New Orleans, bounded below by Pierre Bouvie and above by Antoine Vicner. [7]

  • SAINT-JEAN-BAPTISTE DES ALLEMANDS- Abstracts of the Civil Records of St. John the Baptist Parish with Genealogy and Index 1753-1803 by Glenn R. Conrad. University of Southwestern Louisiana: Lafayette, LA, 1972,p.248. Text:
No. 43 dated August 16, 1800
PROOF OF THE FACT THAT A PIECE OF LAND BELONGS TO THOMAS BECNEL AND NOT TO HIS LATE BROTHER, PIERRE BECNEL. Magdelaine Haydelle, widow of the late Pierre Becnel, declares, in the presence of Louis de Grandmont and Jacques de Lagroue, that she recognizes that the land or farm actually occupied by Thomas Becnel, her brother-in-law, and bounded below by her farm, does, in fact, belong solely and entirely to Thomas Becnel. It is true that her husband bought the farm from the succession of Sebastian Loupe on March 23, 1799, but that he bought it for his brother. Only through negligence did he fail to perform the necessary act of cession to his brother. Therefore, that is the purpose of this act.
Note by Donna Storz: The date transcribed is March 23, 1799, but Loupe died before April 7, 1791 AFTER Pierre Becnel died August 14, 1790, so it seems likely to refer to the succession of Loupe's wife which did occur on March 23, 1789.
