Biography

Elizabeth (Shelton) Arnold was a Virginia colonist.

Elizabeth was born about 1755. She is the daughter of Ralph Shelton and Mary Daniel. She was listed under William Arnold, Sr. in 1830, Rutherford Co., TN, Census. Her age was in the 70-80 age box (born between 1750 and 1760). A marriage record has not been found, but she most likely married in Henry County, Virginia, circa 1777, as that is the county where her parents were living and also where William Arnold was living. She probably died in Rutherford County, Tennessee. Her children were listed in her husband, William Arnold, Sr.'s will.

Research Notes

Elizabeth was listed as Elizabeth Arnold in her father, Ralph Shelton, Jr.'s will written in Henry County, Virginia in 1787. In a settlement of the will, her husband is mentioned by name:

ESTATE SETTLEMENT RECORDS OF RALPH SHELTON, JR. OF HENRY COUNTY, VA - ABSTRACTS OF ORDER BOOK ‘O’, PATRICK COUNTY, VA; JUNE 1791-AUGUST 1800 - from a book compiled by Lela C. Adams, page 32, - Court, Tuesday, 14 May 1793: Samuel Staples against Eliphaz Shelton as Guardian for Esop Shelton, Abigail Shelton, Liberty Shelton, and Mary Shelton. Abram Penn attorney for Ralph Shelton Jr, Palatiah Shelton, Jeremiah Shelton, William McGehee and Julius Robertson also Dudley Rutherford, William Arnold, William Jones, Roger Shelton, Azariah Shelton, Ezekiah Shelton, James Shelton. heirs of Ralph Shelton, dec’d. defendants. - The defendants Dudley Rutherford, William Jones, and William Arnold not having given security and not inhabitants of this county. The defendants are to appear the 2nd Monday of August and answer complaint. Copy to be inserted in the Virginia Gazette for two months."

Note: by 1790, William Arnold had moved to Stokes County, North Carolina.

Elizabeth's sister, Direna Shelton's husband, William McGehee, listed as "worthy friend," signed as witness to William Arnold's 1806 will in Rutherford County, TN.

6 Nov : There is a Data Doctor error 578 regarding death FAG death date of 1820 vs profile of 1830. The profile info is supported by mention of 1830 Tennessee list (census?) but source listings lacking. I briefly tried to trace parents on my ancestry tree (not a direct line), but not yet successful.
