Biography

Joan was the 3rd daughter of Thomas (Customer) Smythe and Alice Judde.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

She was baptised 'Joane Smithe' on 18 Oct 1560 at All Hallows Lombard Street, City of London.[7]

In the will of her great uncle, Henry Brouncker esq of Erlestoke and Melksham, Wiltshire, the will made on 15 Jul 1568 and proved on 12 Aug 1568[8] the Testator made a bequest as follows: "I give and bequeathe to my cosenn Joane Smythe the some of ffortie poundes of lawfull monye to be payde unto her at the tyme of her mariadge." It is possible that he was referring to this Joan Smythe.

Portraits of Joan Smythe, her brothers, sisters and parents, were painted by Cornelis Ketel in 1579-1580[9][10][11] and most (including the one of Joan) are now owned by the Skinners' Company of the City of London. On the painting is written aetatis 19 (i.e. age 19 or in the 19th year).

Marriage

Joan was the second wife of Thomas Fansahwe, Queen’s Remembrancer of the Exchequer, son of John Fanshawe of Dronfield, Derbyshire.[1][12][13][14]

'Joan Smith' married Thomas Fanshawe on 22 Dec 1578 at All Hallows Lombard Street, City of London.[15]

In the will of her father, Thomas (Customer) Smythe, the will made on 22 May 1591 and proved on 29 October 1591[16] she was noted as the wife of Thomas Fanshawe esq. Her father bequeathed £500 to Alice, Thomas, William and Katherine, the children of Joan and Thomas Fanshawe, and to Henry and Walter the sons of Thomas Fanshawe by his late wife Mary, the sum to be equally divided between them.

Joan was a beneficiary of the will of her mother, Alice (Judde) Smythe, the will made on 10 Jul 1592.[17] The will referred to her husband, Master Thomas Fanshawe, and their children Thomas, William, Alice and Katherine.

Her husband, Thomas Fanshawe esq., was buried at Ware, Hertfordshire, on 19 Mar 1600/1601.[18] Joan, along with her sons Thomas and William and her step son Henry Fanshawe, were co-Executors of the will of her husband, the will made on 10 July 1596 and proved on 27 Mar 1601.[19] The will also noted her daughters Alice, Katherine and Margaret. Presumably the other children were already deceased.

  • Philip Fanshawe (baptised 07 Nov 1593 Ware, Hertfordshire; died presumably before 10 Jul 1596)[12]

A Mary Fanshawe who married Thomas Hardwicke of Leeds, Yorkshire, was recorded as a child of Thomas and Joan Fanshawe in the Stemmata Chicheleana.[6] However she was not noted in the will of her father and was not mentioned by Crisp.[12] She may instead have been a daughter of a John Fanshawe and Mary Wiseman of Rivenhall.[23]

In 1608 the Marriage Licence of Katherine Fanshawe, indicates that Joan had been living with her daughter at Barking, Essex:[24]

Katherine Fanshawe, maiden, 18, daughter of Thomas Fanshawe of Christ Church London Esq (decd) married John Bullocke Esq of Inner Temple, Bachelor, 30, by Licence dated 16 Jun 1608. She was married with the consent of her mother Mrs Joane Fanshawe & her brother Mr Thomas Fanshawe Esq; at Barking, Essex where sd mother of sd Katherine liveth.

Wills

In 1597, Joan, recorded as Mistress Fanshawe the elder, was granted a legacy of £50 following the death of her youngest brother Simon Smythe.[25]

Joan was noted in:

  • the will of her brother Robert Smythe, the will made on 01 Dec 1600 and proved on 28 Jan 1600/1601[26]

Burial

"Mistress Joane Fanshaw, widow" was buried on 30 May 1622 at Ware, Hertfordshire.[31]
