Simeon Stetson was born on October 26, 1770 in Randolph, Massachusetts. His parents were John Stetson and Rachael Paine. Stetson moved to Hampden, Maine, from Washington, New Hampshire, in 1804 at the request of his brother Major Amasa Stetson of Boston, who had purchased a township of land in Maine near Hampden (subsequently incorporated as the town of Stetson). Simeon bought 50 acres of land in Hampden and settled his family there. He kept a large general store, had an interest in a saw mill, and built several vessels that engaged in the West India trade, exporting pine boards and bringing back rum and molasses.[1]
Simeon was active the municipal affairs of Hampden, holding office as chairman of the board of Selectmen and as Town Clerk for more than 20 years. He was a Representative to the General Court of Massachusetts before Maine was separated from Massachusetts and served as a member of the convention to frame a constitution for Maine when it became a state. Although he was not a church member, he supported Hampden's churches and owned a pew in each of the churches in the town.[1]
