Biography

Birthdate needs a primary source. July 31, 1713 is given on several Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications for son Anan (see sources below) and on the www.findagrave.com website. ^[1] NOTE: the primary source is located in vital records of Vermont (see Research Notes) and the birthplace has been corrected.

Research Notes

Nathaniel appears in birth records of New Marlborough MA in 1713, but New Marlborough was first occupied as a new settlement in 1739, so his birth there in 1713 is not possible (an unfortunate example of an erroneous vital record). A broader search reveals the correct birthplace as Bennington VT, father Nathaniel, mother Esther, recorded in vital records of Vermont (see References).^[2] This is consistent with the numerous other family records in Bennington cited below. Other branches of the Harmon family were among the first occupants of New Marlborough, moving there from Suffield CT as early as 1745.
