Joseph Warren Matthew's date and place of birth is unclear.
The grave monument photo on Find A Grave shows him being born in 1812 near Huntsville, Ala., however it also says it was erected in 1917, about 55 years after his death.[1]
FindAGrave says he was born 3 Aug 1807 in Laurens County, South Carolina, USA, but does not give a source.[1]
Wikipedia says he was born in 1812 in Huntsville, Alabama, but does not reference a source for the information.[5]

The 1840 census lists only 1 adult white male in the household, with a age of 30-39, implying he was born between 2 Jun 1800 and 1 Jun 1810.[2]
The 1850 census lists his age as 43 on 1 Oct 1850 and place of birth as S Carolina, implying he was born between 2 Oct 1806 and 1 Oct 1807.[3]
The 1860 census lists his age as 52, and shows he was born in NC. His household was enumerated on 28 Aug 1860, although the information was to be as of 1 Jun 1860. This implies he was born between 2 Jun 1807 and 1 Jun 1808.[4]
