Biography

Jonathan Alvord was born 16 Nov 1711, the second child of Mary Strong, the second wife of Thomas Alvord of Northampton, Massachusetts ^[1].

Note: Avoid confusing this Jonathan Alvord with Jonathan Alvord (1712-1796), who was a son of Thankful (Miller) & Jonathan Alvord, born also at Northampton, and living contemporaneously.

This Jonathan Alvord married 16 Oct 1739 at Middletown, Connecticut, Elizabeth Sanford ^[2] [b. 13 Dec 1716 @ Milford, Connecticut, daughter of Samuel & Hannah (Baldwin) Sanford]. Note: The F-A-G memorial page for Elizabeth Sanford lists 1735 as her marriage year, which is erroneous ^[3].

1. Eliphaz Alvord (1742-1825), b. 13 Jan 1742 ^[4]; baptized 17 Jan 1742 @ Durham, Connecticut ^[5][6]
2. David Alvord (1753-), b. 14 Jun 1753 @ East Hampton, Connecticut ^[7]

Per the Alvord genealogy, Jonathan Alvord settled in that part of Middletown known as East Hampton and possibly lived also in what is now Middlefield.

In Oct. 1746, Jonathan Alvord was appointed collector for establishing a church at East Hampton, Conn. In 1748 Jonathan Alvord et al. were appointed to confer with Rev. Norton as to time of installment. (East Hampton Parish.)

In Oct. 1748, he was commissioned Lieut, of the 17th Co., 6th Reg. of Conn., and was Captain in the same regiment and company June, 1753.

After the death of Elizabeth, 7 Apr 1764 at East Hampton, Jonathan Alvord married on November 21, 1765, Mary (Smith) Brainard [daughter of Ralph and Mary (Mayo) Smith; widow of Timothy Brainard].

In 1770 he removed to Winchester, Conn., and lived in a house long since taken down, near where the dugway road turns west to Winchester Center. There he lived until he sold to Joshua Knapp in 1773.

His farm of thirty acres in East Hampton, Conn., he sold Jan. 19, 1770, before his removal to Winchester to Nehemiah Gates for 120 pounds lawful money.

Jonathan Alvord died 28 Jun 1784 at Winchester, Connecticut. His grave is in Winchester Cemetery, Winchester Center, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA ^[8].
