Samuel Belding (Richard), b. abt. I633, in Staflford- shire, England, remained with his father in Wethersfield until 1661, when he removed to Hatfield, Hampshire Co., Mass., on the west bank of the Connecticut River, 21 miles n. of Springfield, Mass. He m. 1st, abt. 1654, Mary , who was killed by the Indians when they attacked Hatfield on 19 September, 1677. In this attack the Indians burned 7 houses; killed 12, wounded 4, and carried 17 in- habitants into captivity. He m. 2d, 25 June, 1678, Mary, widow of Thomas Wells. She d. 29 September, I691, and he m. 3d, Mary, dau. of Thomas Meeker and widow of John Allis. After her death, the date of which is not known, he m. 4th, 10 April, 1705, Sarah, widow of John Wells. The precise date of the formation of the first church in Hatfield is unknown, but there is pretty clear evidence that it took place abt. 1 April, 1671. There were then only six male in- habitants who were church members, and Samuel Belding was one of the six. He d. 3 Jan., 1713
